How to Become a Foster Parent
Persons who desire to foster children submit their “Interest Form” to Family Life Ministries. The form may be submitted through this website, by email or in person at our office.
Persons who submit an Interest Form will be contacted by the FTC Programme and our staff will support and guide you through the application process. You will need to submit the following documents:
- An application form
- Police record
- Reference letters
- Medical certificate
You will also need to meet the following requirements:
- Be between the ages of 25 and 65
- Be a Christian of good moral character
- Have a genuine love and respect for children
- Have the desire to help a child in need
- Live in a stable community
- Earn a stable income
- Be able to provide food clothing and shelter for a child as well as meet his/her educational and medical needs
- Have a child-friendly home
- Be available to attend monthly workshops
The application process also involves;
- An interview
- A biopsychosocial assessment conducted by a counsellor from Family Life Ministries
- A foster care orientation session for persons who meet the requirements and submit application documents
The FTC programme provides various types of support for foster families to help you on your parenting journey.
- ongoing training through monthly parenting workshops to provide you with the knowledge and skills required to raise a child who is a victim of trauma
- A foster parent support group to share joys, successes, challenges and support each other every step of the way. The support group is one of the hallmarks of the programme
- Free counselling for foster families when the need arises
- Regular fun-filled, therapeutic activities for children; including summer camps
- Mentorship for foster children
- Behaviour transformation tools that are based on the attachment model
- 24-hour on call supervision
- Ongoing support from our Social Worker
- A resource centre for matters related to family life
